James Hyman Gallery is delighted to present Andre Kertesz. Thinking Big. The exhibition is the culmination of our series Starting a Collection. Ten Exhibitions in Ten Weeks. This special presentation of works from the Estate of Andre Kertesz will be staged at our stand at PhotoLondon at Somerset House and then continues at the gallery until the 8th of July.
After the Second World War Kertesz began increasingly to return to his earlier works to print them at an enlarged size or to print new pictures at an unprecedented scale.
The exhibition begins with Kertesz famous distortions, and enlarged prints made in the 1940s. It then presents as a key moment, the early 1960s. This was the time that Kertesz international reputation reached new heights through his participation at the Venice Biennale in the summer of 1963, a solo show at the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris in the autumn of 1963 and then in 1964 his major retrospective at MOMA in New York. From this moment we are delighted to present the Muguet Seller, one of the largest prints Kertesz ever made, as well as some of the actual exhibition prints Kertesz had made for Venice.
The presentation concludes with a remarkable selection of large prints of some of Kertesz most famous pictures such as the Satiric Dancer, Melancholy Tulip, Meudon and Chez Mondrian, as well as some less familiar works.
