In 1963 Andre Kertesz was given a retrospective at the Venice Biennale, whch travelled later that year to the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. For the exhibition Kertesz produced large format prints mounted on board.
The following year he had an important retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. After a period of neglect, these events helped re-establish Kertesz as one of the most important photographers of the twentieth century.
In the years after these exhibitions the market for Kertesz' work grew. He produced small prints, as he always had, but also made works in a larger format than before. As well as prints that are 16 x 20 inches, there are also a very small number of prints at 20 x 24 inches. They were made around 1970. By this moment Kertesz did not print his own work. He authorised its printing.
