James Hyman opened his gallery in 1999 and specialises in Twentieth Century British Art, especially figurative art by the Camden Town School, St Ives painters, Kitchen Sink painters, The School of London; and British Pop Art. Solo shows include Michael Andrews, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Peter de Francia, Derrick Greaves, Edward Middleditch, Edouardo Paolozzi, Bridget Riley, Colin Self and WIlliam Turnbull.
The gallery also holds an inventory of important 19th century and 20th century vintage photographs.
In addition to exhibitions, publications, scholarship and art fairs (Frieze Masters, Masterpiece, Paris Photo etc), James Hyman’s core business is as an art advisor. We supply bespoke, expert advice to first time and experienced collectors, helping to source work and advising on acquisitions and sales. We work closely with private collectors and regularly sell and loan to Museums and public collections across the world.

JAMES HYMAN FINE ART was founded in 1999 and aspires to deal in museum quality fine art of art historical significance in particular by twentieth century British Artists. The gallery specialises in Twentieth Century painting, especially by the Camden Town School, St Ives artists, Kitchen Sink painters and the School of London; Sculpture, especially by the post-war Geometry of Fear Sculptors; British Pop Art; and limited edition prints. In addition to our substantial inventory of artworks, we are proud to represent a select group of Artists and Estates. We exclusively represent Derrick Greaves as well as the Estates of Peter de Francia, Nigel Henderson, Robert Medley and Edward Middleditch.
Exhibitions have included represented gallery artists as well as high profile solo exhibitions of Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Pablo Picasso and Bridget Riley.
JAMES HYMAN PHOTOGRAPHY was founded in 2008 and is the leading specialist in London in vintage photographs from the nineteenth century and early twentieth century. We hold a substantial inventory of rare vintage photographs from the early days of British and French photography, through European and American Modernism, and on to the present. We also specialise in British Photography and and are also proud to represent the Estates of celebrated French New Wave photographer Raymond Cauchetier and of Andre Kertesz.
The highest profile photography exhibition so far was devoted to the photographs of Linda McCartney and was co-curated by Paul McCartney and James Hyman.
DR JAMES HYMAN is an art historian and art dealer. He received his PhD from the Courtauld Institute (University of London) and is a leading authority on Twentieth Century British art, especially the painters of the ”School of London”. His doctorate on the subject was published as The Battle for Realism. Figurative Art in Britain during the Cold War (Yale University Press, 2001).
