James Hyman Gallery is proud to present a special exhibition for Photo London, a two person exhibition of Andre Kertesz and Linda McCartney, curated in association with the photographers' Estates.
Andre Kertesz was one of the greatest photographers in the history of the medium and a photographer greatly admired by Linda McCartney. Famed for his modernist photographs made in Paris in the 1920s and then in New York, Kertesz's works are tightly structured meditations on life in the modern metropolis.
Linda McCartney's powerful photographs, like those of Kertesz are often associated with a moment in time, most particularly the 1960s and 1970s, and often use powerfully constructed compositions to create a psychological dimension.
In placing the works of Andre Kertesz and Linda McCartney together for the first time a dialogue emerges and the exhibition presents a series of pairings and groups that include: Self Portraits, Decisive Moments, The City, The Artist's Studio, Portraits, The Natural Sublime, Moodscapes.
Paul McCartney said:
"Linda was very aware of the history of photography and her own position in it. She loved Stieglitz, Diane Arbus, Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, Andre Kertesz and Cartier-Bresson. She was very into the Magnum photographers and into Edward Curtis and Robert Frank. I think she saw herself as following in their footsteps, photographing moments in time."

"Having staged solo exhibitions of both Andre Kertesz and Linda McCartney I am delighted to bring the two photographers together for the first time and excited by the many ways in which their photographs interact. The work of Andre Kertesz is often seen as very structured but showing it with Linda McCartney brings out his sensitivity, intimacy and tenderness. Conversely, whilst many of Linda's photographs are informal, their proximity to Kertesz emphasises her terrific sense of composition and structure. Above all I am excited to present so many iconic photographs and that the dialogue between these works illuminates the essence of both photographers."
